In recent years, the productivity of employees has become one of the omnipresent business mottos such as corporate culture and employee commitment. These days are no rare sight for employees spending long hours in the office. Yet another aspect is, how much workday is spent productively. A productive workplace benefits not only employees but also clients and investors. When employees in an organization manage their time and manufacture work flawlessly, business output and material costs are increased. In the end, this will increase their profits, reduce waste and satisfy their investors.

Some steps can be taken by companies to increase productivity at work and motivate employees. They use clear metrics of performance to demonstrate efficiency and work quality for their employees and can show their appreciation when they meet these metrics. In order to be an efficient manager, the company must ensure consistent processes, which communication is clear and honest and that employees do not have unrealistic deadlines. The productivity of workers can also increase if managers can find new tools to accelerate shared tasks, take action when the workplace is hostile and give more control to workers.

Multitasking can be a productivity killer. A study from Sussex University in the UK shows that multitasking can damage the brain physically. This study showed that participants who are addicted to the use of multiple devices simultaneously have a lower Gray matter density at an area called the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC).

Downgrade quality equipment and machinery will also reduce productivity. It is often sensible to do so when menial tasks can be automated with the office equipment. This helps to free up the workforce to work on more important tasks. But equipment that is functional and easy to use is also important.

Giving motivation to the employees will show a leap in the productivity level. Most employers do not recognize employees for their well-done work, while it may seem like common sense, which can result in the loss of employee morals. Thus, companies give words of encouragement to the employees and make sure they are rewarded accordingly once the situation improves. Other forms of rewards may also be offered, such as increased time off or leave days. Recognition could happen, not only monetary, in many ways.

Low workplace productivity may compromise sustainability for any company, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises. The companies must ensure that the effectiveness of their employees is monitored continuously.
