Deteriorating market narratives in 2023 could temper this year's tentative rebound in average earnings for corporates globally.
FREMONT, CA: The tentative worldwide corporate average profits recovery that started this year could be muted by worsening conditions in 2023. On 20,000 unrated corporates, S&P Global Ratings conducted its stress tests from July of last year once more.
The findings indicate that less creditworthy corporate entities are at risk. The debt-weighted ratio of cash flow-negative enterprises would increase from eight per cent in 2021 to 11 per cent in 2023 under its base case. The ratio increases to 16 per cent under the severe stress test, which implies a 300 basis point increase in interest rates and inflation over its base-case projections for 2023.

A cloud hovers over global corporates heading into 2023. Global corporates confront a triple-whammy of reduced growth, tightened margins, and worsening financing circumstances next year as the Russia-Ukraine crisis continues and major central banks continue to fight inflation. China's corporations are the most exposed regionally. As anticipated, this cohort's cash flow negative ratio increases the greatest under pressure. Consumer discretionary, industrial, and real estate sectors are slow to recover as an industry, making them more susceptible to credit challenges. In the stress scenario, these industries experience the most rise in cash flow negative ratios.
Although a decline in cost inflation is anticipated in 2023, Mr Chan warned that if supply issues persist, pricing pressures could stay and continue to erode earnings. Additionally, stickier inflation can lead investors to request greater interest spreads to protect actual gains.
